If you are a travel in a wheelchair, which city in Brazil do you recommend more, Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro?
Mostly in terms of transportation, but any other aspect that might be important too!

I know a lot about Rio, I’ve never been there, but my feeling is that São Paulo is a little more prepared for wheelchair users considering its development.
Though it’s important to know that most cities in Brazil have lots of obstacles on sidewalks, that is under the responsibility of the property owner, that may prioritize the aesthetics rather than its accessibility (sometimes steps, slopes, grass or even a tree in the middle of the sidewalk).
In this video (English), Daniel explains how is to live in São Paulo as a wheelchair user. We can have an idea about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MM2AvL0MKlY
Let me know if I can help with any further information! 🙂

Hello, my family and I are also planning a trip to Brazil next year. We will be going to Rio, would it be ideal to hire drivers (we’re a group of 5) rather than rely on public transportation? I’ve read about the metro system built with electronic wheelchair lifts, are these functional? Also, this is more of a general concern rather than that of accessibility, but are mugging and scams that really a high risk as this website (https://www.travelsafe-abroad.com/brazil/rio-de-janeiro/) suggests? We are of course still in the process of researching but would love to learn from someone from there/been there. Thank you!
