To cruise or nost to cruise??
To cruise or nost to cruise??
I’m going on a cruise from Toyoko to Alaska on Holland America Westerdam. I’m taking my Luggie as I don’t walk very well. I saw post (not on this site) that said if you were immune compromised you shouldn’t go cruising. What do you think.
I’ve also requested a disablity cabin, but haven’t heard and chances are slim at getting one I think. Any ideas for managing? Although I appreciated the idea of taking a door stop

If you booked your cruise through a travel advisor, they should be able help you with your cabin. Anywhere people are in close proximity and don’t practice good personal hygiene, disease will spread more easily.

I’ve asked the travel advisor for the trip and they have requested it on my behalf. Whil’s I’m taking my luggy I do need support going to the bathroom etc and just wondered abut what was available or for hire on board to make it easier – just in case.
Are you working with a travel advisor that specializes in working with handicapped individuals? If not, make sure they understand your limitations. If it’s a 3rd party firm vs Holland America, you may be better served to book directly to ensure they are aware of your needs up front and ensure you have the the right accommodations.
As for staff to help you with toileting, etc., don’t count on it. Ideally, you will bring your own personal care staff to address your specific needs. (I took an aunt cruising for the last 15 years or so, as she could not handle her own needs). The cruise is designed to handle able-bodied passengers. Less-than-independant passengers need travel companions (usually family members) to act as advocates or an extra pair of hands if assistance is needed.
Hi Joanne, thanks for your reply and advice. Fortunately toileting isn’t the issue – just mobility access. Unfortunately for this cruise we had to use a credit form a prevously covd-cancelled cruise in 2020,but the copany have tried hard to accommodate needs and understand the issues. It is really thinking through and knowing the right questions to ask. 🙂
Oh, so glad I misread your needs. In general, there are lots of toilets on every floor, with extras near the casino and gathering spots. If your only worry is access, you should be fine. They are normal sized, not tiny, and I hope you have a wonderful time.
