  • Wheelchair Accessible Taxi

Hi, we are wanting to travel to Japan next year and my son is a wheelchair user.
He has a Permobil F3 which with him in it would weigh about 260kg which is above the weight limit of some of the accessible taxis. The travel agent told us the limit was 180kg for their contact.

The WHILL F is not suitable for him and we cant rent a wheelchair…

    • Hello. I run a taxi company in Osaka for people with disabilities. I would like to know why the Whill wheelchair is not suitable for your son. It is difficult to give specific advice without knowing what features you are looking for. Thank you.

  • Ever booked an "accessible" room that wasn't?

This seems to keep coming up — you book through a major platform, confirm the room, and then arrive to find a tub instead of a roll-in shower, or a “wheelchair accessible” room with a step at the door. What happened, and how did you handle it?

    • I try to book through the hotel chain’s official website as much as possible.

One of the few times the room wasn’t what I reserved was at the EXCALIBUR in Las Vegas. The bed’s box spring hadn’t been removed as requested and the shower had a step. I immediately went downstairs to the front desk. The security guard directed me ahead of everyone…

  • Traveling with your own mobility scooter — worth it or not?

Some people swear by bringing their own travel scooter on international trips. Others rent at the destination. If you’ve done either (or both), what worked better for you? Anything you wish you’d known before your first trip with one?

    • I’ve always travelled with my manual chair, but I hire a power chair at the destination I’m going to, not sure if this helps, but that’s what I do

    • We have encountered a case where a passenger’s personal electric scooter was damaged during a flight from Los Angeles to Narita.

The airline urgently arranged to rent one of our electric scooters, which the customer used during their trip. Although the airline initially stated that the scooter would be repaired before the customer’s return,… Read more

    • US government websites have 3 weeks to meet new accessibility standards

On April 24, every US state and local government serving 50,000+ people must make their websites and mobile apps meet WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards under a new ADA Title II rule. That includes transit agency sites, paratransit booking apps, and public tourism portals.

Only about 4% of government homepages currently meet WCAG standards,…

    • Air France was not fun

I recently came back from a trip to Japan, and I landed in Paris (CDG Airport) with a Air France flight. When going to the luggage area where my electric power wheelchair was sent, I transfered from the manual chair of the airport to my own chair. When I switched my chair on, it was not working anymore. I tried to switch on / off several…

      • What a horrible experience, we are so sorry to hear this. Really hope you find someone to help you because this is unacceptable, but understand the hopelessness.

        • That is horrible! Even if there is little hope, please keep us posted.
