Are there issues with traveling by public transport in a scooter in your country? There is here in Japan – and I thought it was only a Japan issue, but was reading about registering scooters for smooth access to train in the UK and see the issue is bigger than Japan…

In Belgium, mobility scooters are allowed on the train (although limits to size and weight apply) and in the subway. Not on buses and trams, however.
The official reason of ‘safety’ is never explained. As far as I know, if you can position yourself with your back towards the driver there shouldn’t be a safety issue.-
It may be the safety of others, not the scooter rider! I think that was part of the reasoning here as well. Trains run on a very tight schedule and get very packed. The doors usually only open for about 40s, so getting out in a 40s window when turning on crowded train may mean others are hit… (?) Not sure.
The other thing here is that when the rules were made a “scooter” was one of those big outdoor things, not the compact ones we have today. So, the rules are taking a while to catch up with reality.
Japan Rail is starting to offer a similar registration system, but have a feeling it would be useful for foreign visitors…
