Reply To: Getting around Fukushima in a wheelchair
Thanks for the question Josh,
I think the Tohoku Shinkansen and Fukushima Station are quite accessible, but the local bus system is not very well developed. Wheelchair rentals are available from the Tourist Information Center. Taxi is probably the best way to get around the city.
The Fukushima Barrier-Free Tour Center has an online map with accessibility information for accommodation, and tourist areas. It has photos of parking, rooms, and bathroom facilities: https://www.fukushima-bftc.jp/?locale=en
The most popular tourist attraction in Fukushima City is Hanamiyama in early April. We have the ‘jinriki’ (人力) service, and volunteer guides. We made a video about it a few years ago:
https://youtu.be/9tyBUUOuakEOne of the local fruit orchards, Azuma Orchard, has accessible fruit orchards where wheelchair users can try fruit picking.
