Connect with travelers with disabilities and welcoming locals, offering tips on accessible hotels, wheelchair-friendly attractions, and transportation in Japan. From Tokyo’s bustling Shibuya Crossing and historic Asakusa to Kyoto’s golden Kinkaku-ji, Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park, and the hot springs of Hakone, whether it’s your first visit or a return trip, this is the place to ask about accommodations, getting around, or inclusive activities – someone here has likely experienced it before. You’ll find personal stories, travel tips, and recommendations for cultural, historical, and nature experiences. This group supports mobility aid users, along with travelers who have sensory sensitivities, low vision, and hearing loss, helping you enjoy a more accessible Japan adventure.
Reply To: University Accessibility in Japan?
Yes, snow will be a big issue for Akita (or any university on the Sea of Japan side of Japan as the cold winds come across the sea, pick up moisture, then dumps massive amounts of snow when it hits the mountains).
I think any university in and around Tokyo, Osaka, or Kyoto will likely be fine for accessibility especially now that there are anti-discrimination laws in effect and they would need to provide “reasonable accommodation” for your disability.
I know of two others who came and they had people at the campus help them find housing etc. I’m not sure if she is still in Japan but @zeng went to University of Tokyo and is a wheelchair user.
