Train travel in Japan for limited mobility travelers
We just spent 1 month in Japan, riding trains and taking taxis. The train system is excellent, once you figure out how it works. My husband has a cane and can only walk about 300 meters without resting. Buy all tickets at the information/help office at any station. Online didn’t work for us -even after many attempts. You have to make your way to the check -in gate for your trains departure. At the gate, you ask for wheelchair assistance. Arrive at least 30 min prior to departure. Say you need help with any transfers and at the arrival station. They will take you to the train, meet you at transfer stations, and meet you upon arrival. At large stations they have elevators, medium stations they have interesting lifting devices up stairs and small remote stations they have nothing (so do your research!) This excellent, often improvised service made our trip possible. Japan IS possible via rail! Research hotels carefully – only book wheelchair accessible places. Have a great time!!
