Hiya! I’m Marlayne AKA Papaya; 38yrs old Canadian freelance artist! I became disabled after a botched epidural 10 years ago, now I’m an ambulatory wheelchair user; but I rely more and more on my chair.
I loved traveling before this all happened, and now I am learning to travel as a disabled woman; looking for things to do that are accessible and places to go.
I learned about Tabifolk from the youtube video of Wheel Around The World 🙂

So happy to have you here – and glad I met Shane that afternoon! Looking forward to hearing about the awesome journeys you’ll take!

Welcome, Papaya, you’ll find lots of exciting things to do on tabifolk, just as I have (I am in a wheelchair all the time after a subarachnoid hemorrhage in Feb 2007). I have travelled back to South Africa (where I’m originally from) to prove to my family and friends that I was still alive because no one in my family had ever been in a wheelchair before, and secondly to celebrate my late husband’s and my 10th Wedding Anniversary with the 2 people who were our witnesses and my beloved parents. We also visited a friend’s safari camp in Kenya, where they’d set up a special Patty’s tent in their tented camp on the Mara Triangle. Of course, we went to test that out. After my husband died in 2022, my Deputy and Case Manager came to see me and asked when I last I had had a holiday. I said in 2017, they said it was time I took another one, so we arranged for us to visit my sister and her lovely family in Australia, who live just 2 hours north of Sydney. We (I had to take 2 Support Workers with me) flew to Singapore for 3 nights on route (which we found VERY accessible, even the bus drivers got out of the bus and put a ramp out to enable my wheelchair to get on the bus 😀. We visited the iconic Marina Bay Hotel and had drinks and snacks on their amazing pool deck. It was incredibly emotional seeing my sister for the first time in 10 years, and to be able to hug her was awesome. We rented a perfect house, it had a profiling bed (for me), a fully kitted out wet room, an accessible kitchen (bliss for me as I adore cooking 😃), we were able to invite friends and family over for meals, and it was 4 weeks of bliss. We visited the awesome Sydney Opera House twice, once to see an amazing ballet entitled Jewels (the first act was Ruby, so the dancers wore Rubies on their red costumes, the second act was Emeralds, so the dancers wore emeralds and their costumes were green, and the final act was Diamonds so the dancers wore white and had Diamonds on their outfits and head dresses. The second time was to see an incredible Verdi Requiem with a full orchestra, a choir of 280 singers, and 4 soloists. If I could have stood, I would have, as they got and deserved a standing ovation 🎤🎻. We visited the Blue Mountains, an Aboriginal art gallery, and a Walkabout Wildlife Park where I got to hold a snake, a bearded dragon, and a few other reptiles. We said a VERY sad farewell to my sister’s family and then flew via Singapore again. I can vouch for the accessibility of both countries
