    • Did you know? The legendary vampire Count Dracula was partly inspired by a real historical figure! Vlad III, nicknamed Vlad the Impaler, was a 15th-century prince of Wallachia (in present-day Romania). He ruled with a fierce hand and defended his homeland against the Ottoman Empire’s expansion. His strict (and often harsh) methods of justice earned him a fearsome reputation, even as many in Romania remember him as a hero who protected his people.

Vlad’s family name was Dracula, meaning “son of Dracul” (Dragon). Bram Stoker, the author of the classic novel Dracula, borrowed this name for his famous vampire character. The chilling tales of Vlad’s cruelty and bravery helped inspire Stoker’s story, though the fictional Count Dracula is far more supernatural! In reality, Vlad the Impaler was not a vampire, but a determined (if brutal) ruler fighting for his land. His life and legend have become intertwined, making Vlad an enduring figure in both history and folklore.

On his head is a tall red velvet hat adorned with pearls and a large jeweled brooch featuring a red stone and golden starburst. The background is dark, making his facial features and ornate clothing stand out. The text at the bottom reads: “The Legend of Count Dracula.” In the top-right corner is the logo for Accessible Romania by Sano Touring.]
