tabifolk Talks: Exploring Morgan’s Wonderland, The World’s First Ultra-Accessible Theme Park

A virtual talk show with Danielle and Sharon Newhardt on "tabifolk talks," featuring a travel-related discussion about Morgan's Wonderland

Morgan’s Wonderland, located in San Antonio, Texas, is a groundbreaking theme park designed to be fully inclusive for individuals of all abilities. In a recent episode of Tabifolk Talks, we had the pleasure of speaking with Sharon Newhardt, Director of Inclusion and Culture at Morgan’s Wonderland. She shared the inspiring story behind the park, its unique attractions, and its commitment to accessibility.

The Story Behind Morgan’s Wonderland

Morgan’s Wonderland was founded by Gordon and Maggie Hartman, inspired by their daughter Morgan, who has cognitive and physical disabilities. During a family vacation, Morgan attempted to play with other children in a swimming pool but was unable to communicate her intentions. The children, unsure of how to interact with her, left—leaving Morgan heartbroken. This moment inspired the Hartmans to create a space where everyone can play together, regardless of ability.

Opened in 2010, Morgan’s Wonderland became the first ultra-accessible theme park in the world, setting new standards for inclusion in the amusement park industry.

Attractions That Redefine Accessibility

1. Morgan’s Wonderland Theme Park

The original dry park features wheelchair-accessible rides that allow guests to stay in their mobility devices. From traditional amusement rides to innovative sensory-friendly experiences, every detail has been designed with inclusion in mind.

2. Morgan’s Inspiration Island

Recognizing the Texas heat, the team expanded in 2017 to include a fully accessible water park. Featuring splash pads with different water temperatures, gentle streams, and even a wheelchair-accessible boat ride, this addition ensures that cooling off is fun for everyone.

3. New Attractions in 2024

Morgan’s Wonderland recently underwent its first major renovation since opening, introducing new thrilling yet accessible experiences:

  • Rocket Sky Flight Adventure – The world’s first four-seater zipline with built-in accommodations for medical equipment.
  • Lake Cruises – Two accessible barges that allow guests to explore the park’s scenic lake.
  • Jets’ Wonder Bikes – A pedal-powered flying ride designed to accommodate different mobility levels.
  • Mars Coaster 4D Theater – A first-of-its-kind simulation roller coaster where even guests using wheelchairs experience the same movement as seated riders.

Raising the Bar for Inclusive Travel: Morgan’s Wonderland Hotel

Beyond the theme park, Morgan’s Wonderland is taking accessibility a step further by launching Morgan’s Wonderland Hotel, expected to open in late 2025. The hotel aims to address common travel barriers, ensuring that guests with disabilities have accommodations that suit their unique needs, from mobility-accessible rooms to sensory-friendly spaces.

The Importance of Inclusive Travel

Accessibility in travel goes beyond theme parks—it impacts hotels, transportation, and public spaces. Sharon emphasized that inclusive design should be the norm, not an afterthought. Morgan’s Wonderland actively consults with businesses and organizations to improve accessibility, helping create a more inclusive world.

Why Morgan’s Wonderland is a Must-Visit Destination

Whether you’re a traveler with a disability, a family looking for an inclusive experience, or a theme park enthusiast, Morgan’s Wonderland is a must-visit destination. The park proves that accessibility and adventure can go hand in hand.
