  • Hakuba (Japan Alps) trip report Fall 2025

We visited Hakuba as a day-trip from Matsumoto mid-October for some fall colors and were not disappointed! Train to Hakuba was 1 hr (1.5 hr if not express), allowed an extra 15 minutes to get a ramp / “ramp-u”, which was quick and easy. From Hakuba station, a taxi loaded up the 3 of us with a foldable wheelchair (thanks to bungee cords in…

  • First-time solo trip to Kyoto + Ine (mobility scooter & slow travel tips)

    Hi everyone 👋

I’m planning my first solo trip to Japan and I would love some advice.
I can walk short distances, but I sometimes need help for longer walking days, so I’m exploring a slow-travel plan in Kyoto and Ine (fishing village).

I can usually walk, but I’m planning to rent a mobility scooter just in case, and I’m also interested in having a…

  • Mastumoto trip report Fall 2025

We enjoyed a great fall day in Matsumoto; started out with a 30-minute train journey north to Hotaka Station (Azumino), then walked about 3 kilometers with friend in foldable wheelchair to the Daio Wasabi farms. The last kilometer was on a narrow road without sidewalk, but bikes frequent the route so cars are used to seeing and…

  • Hotels for hoist users

Hi, I’m an Austrian university student planning a potential trip to Japan, and I’m looking for hotels in Tokyo. Because I have muscular dystrophy, I mostly rely on a hoist (Hoyer lift) for transfers. The hotel needs to be accessible for a wheelchair/powerchair, and there should be enough space for the hoist to be maneuvered to the toilet and…

    • I agree. I only used the hoist for him in the bathroom and didn’t notice if the legs would go under the bed. Sorry not to be more of more help.

    • Accessible Apartment Stays

Hello, my Japanese wife and I (wheelchair user) have often stayed in universal/accessible hotels. However, we are expecting a newborn and hope to find a bigger place to accommodate a pram, wheelchair, suitcases etc with laundry while we visit her family, like a monthly furnished apartment rental (we’ve seen these are popular for…

      • I know one close to Eda Station (Tokyu Den’entoshi Line) which is 30 min. from Shibuya. The bathroom might not be fully accessible. A friend of mine stayed there for three months. OAK Apartment Eda https://www.oakhouse.jp/eng/apartment/910

        • Thank you for the tip! We will look into this option, the bathroom looks perfect to transfer on to a shower chair. Judging by the contract fee it looks like a longer term rental.
