• Hi everyone,

I’m visiting Japan with some family members in mid October this year and I’m feeling very unsure about it. I can’t walk but will be renting a WHILL model F for the duration of the trip because my mobility is limited due to almost lifelong rheumatoid arthritis.. The holiday is now fully paid for so no possibility of cancelling.

I’ve read so much good advice from this group and other sources online but I’m seeing so many depressing comments on my Japan Facebook groups about the number of places with stairs in Japan.

Constantly reading comments like “don’t go to Japan if you can’t do stairs“ , “There’s no avoiding stairs in Japan” etc.

Can members reassure me that with a little planning and advance research? It is possible to have a wonderful time even if your mobility is limited?

      • Ruth my husband (power wheelchair user) and I visited Japan for 2 weeks last November.

The most significant problem we faced was finding accessible restaurants. Other than that most of what we found was accessible.

Somewhere on this site someone posted a list of accessible restaurants in Tokyo that would be helpful for you

We have gotten used to many places being inaccessible so we haven’t let this stop us. I wouldn’t cancel your trip, but I would plan what you would like to see and how you would get there if you plan as much as you can I think you will have a fabulous time!

        • I use a power wheelchair and have lived in Japan for almost 20 years. You certainly can! Sure there are many stairs, but nearly always an alternative accessible route. People saying that are just using the non-accessible routes so just see those. Don’t worry!

          • I use a power wheelchair and went to Japan 2 times, come back again in october and next year. Japan is the most accessible country I visited, even if everything is not perfect, there is so much interesting things to see and do that you cannot be deceived. Let depressive people be depressive and say what they want, the truth is Japan is much more easier to visit than Europe with a power wheelchair. I hope you will enjoy your trip !

            • Thank you for your kind comments everyone. You have given me some reassurance

              Love
