Mastumoto trip report Fall 2025
We enjoyed a great fall day in Matsumoto; started out with a 30-minute train journey north to Hotaka Station (Azumino), then walked about 3 kilometers with friend in foldable wheelchair to the Daio Wasabi farms. The last kilometer was on a narrow road without sidewalk, but bikes frequent the route so cars are used to seeing and accommodating wheeled things ;). On the way we passed by a stair-free shrine complex (Hotaka Shrine), and a small temple (Tokoji Temple) – both very calm and relaxing to see. Many of the paths within the wasabi farm were accessible, including getting to see workers in the fields themselves, and of course try super fresh wasabi! We then returned to Matsumoto to see Matsumoto Castle (1.5 km walk from station, plus path around), which was beautiful from the free path around the moat. We decided to go into the castle grounds – which I do NOT recommend in a wheelchair, they charge full price and you get to see the grounds but can’t go in the castle (6 floors of HUGE knee-high stairs to climb!) I felt views were better from outside the moat anyway. We returned with a stop to explore the historic Nawate shopping street, again easy to maneuver and lovely as the sun was setting. City buses claim to be wheelchair-friendly but we felt more comfortable walking since it wasn’t clear how *many* of the busses were wheelchair-friendly (when we asked they were kinda vague.)

Thank you for the awesome update! Too bad they charged full price when you couldn’t fully access it… 🫤

@joshgrisdale Definitely unfortunate, we had read this and knew going in, but just assumed the inside grounds would be worth it. Meh.
