Accessible hotels in Tokyo and Kyoto
Hi – I am new to Tabifolk so I’m not sure how to best navigate the site and I’m sure this has been discussed before. I am planning a trip to Tokyo and Kyoto in April (first-time visitor to Japan) and wanted to get recommendations for barrier-free/wheelchair accessible hotels in these cities that are located near the usual attractions.
I am an ambulatory wheelchair user and plan to bring my foldable, power wheelchair on the trip (I’m based in the US). I will be traveling with my husband and potentially my 25 year old daughter so a bonus would be a room that can accommodate 2 adults.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi and welcome to Tabifolk!
I’m based in Japan and run an accessible travel company, so I regularly help wheelchair users plan trips to Tokyo and Kyoto. I’d be very happy to share hotel suggestions or even help you with the arrangements if that would be useful.
For example, in Tokyo many of my guests like Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku, which has several universal design / accessible rooms with wide doorways and accessible bathrooms, and it’s very close to Shinjuku Station for getting around the city. In Kyoto, Hotel Granvia Kyoto at Kyoto Station has an accessible “Universal Room” and step-free access from the Shinkansen, which makes transfers with a power wheelchair much easier.
If you’d like, feel free to tell me a bit more about your priorities (roll-in shower vs. bathtub with grab bars, bed height, distance from the station, budget, whether your daughter will join, etc.), and I can suggest specific room types and help with bookings.
Of course, you’re also completely free to book hotels directly yourself if you prefer — I’m happy just to share information. And if you’d like more personalized support, you’re very welcome to contact me directly at flatcare2025@gmail.com.
