Mobility scooters or wheelchairs
I’ve been told Japan has strict restrictions about bringing mobile wheelchairs or scooters from out of the country. We are going to Tokyo Osaka Kyoto and Hiroshima. I’ve found a lightweight motorized wheelchair that might be ok but wondered if there are places to rent in those cities. Need something to keep up with my family when walking any distance. If I can use this, will shop owners hold it while I go in places? Ok to bring on trains? Appreciate any thoughts and ideas. Thank you j

There are no limiting issues for wheelchairs, but scooters can be a bit limited on certain trains/stations due to the turning radius. You can see some of the rules here: https://www.accessible-japan.com/mobility-scooters-japan/
As for leaving it outside a shop, while you can ask them about a good place to leave it, it wouldn’t really be the shop owner’s responsibility as it a public space. I think it would be ok for a short stop in the store, but would be a bit more cautious if it was going for a meal etc. While Japan is very safe, be sure to take bags/valuables with you.
We have just come back from Japan and we have a lightweight electric wheelchair and had no problems getting on trains metro etc.Depends where you are going but again most shops had good access only problem we had was a lot of restaurants are either up a lot of stairs or down steep stairs and as already mentioned although Japan is very safe it is also very crowded so your chair may get in the way if left outside .We are already planning to go back !
