  • Booking wheelchair seat on Shinkansen bullet train

I was on the official Smart-ex website to book train seats. There will be 3 of us – me in a wheelchair plus 2 companions. When I key in 3 adults and request a wheelchair accessible seat, it says I can’t do it for 3. I think it thinks I’m reserving 3 wheelchair seats. If I book 1 wheelchair seat for me, how do I book the other 2 to make sure…

    • Hi, my experience was that wheelchair seat cannot be booked online. There are only a few seats in train that are considered as wheelchair seats. If you can book wheelchair accessible seat online, please share the website. Many thanks.

    • You have to go through the system twice. Get the wheelchair seat first. Having done the trip several times you don’t get a lot of chances to see Fuji as it might be obscured by clouds and there’s a lot of noise barriers on the trackside not to mention tunnels which limit the view.

  • Accessibility in restaurants

I’m an ambulatory wheelchair user – I can stand and walk with canes but steps and stairs are hard for me. Any tips for finding wheelchair accessible restaurants (aside from the info on Accessible Japan) and if a restaurant is too small to navigate with a wheelchair, it is ok/safe to leave my wheelchair outside the restaurant while I just use…

    • We had great luck on the top floors of department stores … generally a variety of restaurants, easy elevator access, and you can eyeball which will fit a wheelchair (though leaving outside was an option..) Bonus is sometimes you get city views too :-).

      • Hi there! I am also partially ambulatory and had no issues either leaving my wheelchair (it’s foldable) near the restaurant entrance or even outside (like at a mall or food court).

    • Booking Shinkansen as a wheelchair user

I know that I have to reserve a wheelchair seat on the Shinkansen (bullet train). I’m planning to do this to go between Tokyo and Kyoto. I’ve read that since there are many trains with many seats one can just book at the station. Since we are flexibile about departure times, I’m leaning towards doing this so that we don’t arrive at the…

      • Book. Whilst there’s plenty of trains there are only a few wheelchair seats per train and everyone else reserves them. You need to turn up 30 minutes before your train which departs on the second at it’s scheduled time. Trying to get a ticket on the day might mean sitting around for the whole day which is a waste of time. You will also pay…

        • Good morning.☺️

I recommend that you get your Shinkansen tickets in advance. Go to “Midori-no-madoguci” a few days before the day you want to board the Shinkansen, on a day when your schedule is relatively flexible. Every Shinkansen train has wheelchair-accessible seats. The train you want to board may be booked. But don’t worry. There’s a…

And also restaurant search by google map have information about accessibility by wheelchair

I’m wheelchair friendly taxi near Narita airport, I could help to find restaurants following your requirements

          • As you saw the Accessible Japan info, I guess you saw how to filter for accessible options on Gurunavi. WheeLog is a great option for researching restaurants in your vicinity, but as it is crowdsourced it may not have a lot of places.

Tabelog released an English app recently. However, I can’t download it since it isn’t available in the App…

        • How to search for something in the Japan group

I am relatively new to this group. How do I search for a topic – eg booking shinkansen accessible seats? I’m sure most of my questions have been asked previously.

          • Hello!
At the beginning of the feed of a group, there is a search button that looks like a looking glass. You can type in your keyword and it will filter the activity below to only show results with that keyword.

On desktop there is a “search tabifolk” button in the header, on mobile it just shows the magnifying glass on the top right of…
