Elevators at stations are in Japan are operational 99.9% of the time. But that is because they regularly test and maintain them. But during maintenance, there is always a way – these terrifying things!
You get strapped in, wheelchair and all, and it climbs up and down the steps with caterpillar tires.

Yeah, I used this a couple of times in Shinjuku and Ebisu.
When stations are under construction or restructuring it could be the only way to reach the platform.

Omg! I wish I could have used on one of these gadgets before I left Tokyo. I was so unlucky that I had problems with the elevators on the subways 2 times during my 6-day visit to Tokyo.
