  • From Taipei to Okinawa power wheelchair issue

Just sharing an experience that I had recently while flying from Taipei to Okinawa (Naha) with EVA Air.

At Taipei international airport when checking in, they told me that in Naha, due to the airport’s regulation, I would not be able to use my power wheelchair and that I would have to pick it up at baggage claim with the rest of my luggage.

    I…

    • Thank you for your post. I am preparing for a trip to Japan and I have a power assist battery on my manual wheelchair also. It is seeming like I should just not even try to bring the power assist part so that my chair will not have a battery at all. These airports all seem to make everything difficult when there is a battery involved. It would…

  • Leaving a scooter outside a restaurant or shop in Japan.

    Hi Everyone,

my name is Oliver and I have cerebral palsy.

So I’m going to Japan in late November to early December for about two weeks and am super excited. I will most likely bring a scooter called DashMoto 3. I can walk, but I can’t do it for long periods of time and I will be going with a group of friends as well.

My main concern is if I go to…

    • Good question. Following as I’d like to know if it is okay to secure the scooter with a bike lock at front too. I suspect it will depend on space in front of the restaurant etc. keen to know what others have experienced

      • Would love to know as well. I posted a similar question in a FB group since I’m an ambulatory wheelchair user. Folks said it is ok and safe to leave it outside (I think the challenge would be if the sidewalk is narrow)

      • Wheelchair Accessible Taxi

Hi, we are wanting to travel to Japan next year and my son is a wheelchair user.
He has a Permobil F3 which with him in it would weigh about 260kg which is above the weight limit of some of the accessible taxis. The travel agent told us the limit was 180kg for their contact.

The WHILL F is not suitable for him and we cant rent a wheelchair…

        • Hello. I run a taxi company in Osaka for people with disabilities. I would like to know why the Whill wheelchair is not suitable for your son. It is difficult to give specific advice without knowing what features you are looking for. Thank you.

      • The Right Mobility Setup For Jaapn

        Hello everyone!

I am a solo wheelchair traveler planning my first trip to Japan. My plan is to travel for 1 month, do the golden route and expand beyond with various day trips and other possible locations. My usual setup for traveling is a manual wheelchair with a scooter attachment (Rio Firefly 2.5), crutches and a medium sized luggage…

        • My daughter has a manual wheelchair with a Freewheel attachment which is probably similar in size to a Firefly and we had no trouble with it on the metro although it was removed for buses. To be fair she now also has a Klaxon scooter wheel which does cause some manoeuvring problems on London buses because of the increase in length so you…

        • Just make sure you have the IATA paperwork for the Firefly battery and clear it with your airline before you travel (if you haven’t already done it). JAL are great but I hear both them and ANA are a bit sensitive about the fire risk of big batteries. We are currently having an issue with Klaxon because they have changed battery supplier… Read more
