  • Onsen Stay Between Tokyo and Osaka that isn't too physically demanding

    Hey,

Planning a trip that starts in Tokyo and ends in Osaka, inbetween this I’m looking at doing an overnight Onsen stay. Ideally looking for an option that getting there wouldn’t be to physically taxing/has easy transport to and from train stations either via bus or taxi.

My disability means I can walk but am limited and try to not do too…

    • Anywhere between the two? If so, Hakone likely has the best variety of onsen to choose from. A number have accessible rooms. Most have shuttle buses to them from the train station as well.

    • Electric wheelchair hire Tokyo

      Hello,

I am wanting to hire an electric wheelchair for my father in December. I was looking at Scootabout, has anybody used them ?

      Thanks

    • Japan outside of the big cities

Outside of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, what places are you interested in visiting in Japan?

Has accessibility made it hard to get to them?

        • I’m in Japan right now, landed today, headed to Kobe, Okayama, Kyoto, Nagoya and Chiba. So far, assistance from JR has been great. I would have definitely been overwhelmed by the trains without it on my first day. Some trips and classes that I wanted to sign up for were not available for wheelchair users but I did manage to find some that work…

        • Wheelchair Accessible Entrance in Google Maps

Hello, in looking for wheelchair-friendly spots I’m curious how useful / accurate Google Maps “Wheelchair-Accessible Entrance” flag is, especially for Tokyo restaurants and coffeehouses (pink circled icon, you can also filter by those that are.) Any opinions/insights/findings from others?

          • From experience, I feel that in general it errs towards caution and places are by default set to be “not accessible” until marked as “accessible”. So, if it has the mark it should be ok, but if it has a “not” mark, it could mean it is not accessible, or just not yet verified.

            • Thanks Josh, we found the same thing. Department stores were our go-to when short on time, almost always we could elevator up and wheel into any of the restaurants, once we scored an AMAZING view from above (Soba on the top floors of Mitsukoshi Ginza)

            • Hakuba (Japan Alps) trip report Fall 2025

We visited Hakuba as a day-trip from Matsumoto mid-October for some fall colors and were not disappointed! Train to Hakuba was 1 hr (1.5 hr if not express), allowed an extra 15 minutes to get a ramp / “ramp-u”, which was quick and easy. From Hakuba station, a taxi loaded up the 3 of us with a foldable wheelchair (thanks to bungee cords in…
