Saint Petersburg is a multidimensional city that has modern and historical aspects intervene and complete each other. The city attracts millions of tourists every year, and there is definitely a reason for that.
The city was founded by Peter the Great in the beginning of the 18th century on the site that before was just all about swamps and forests. The Emperor saw St Petersburg as a new capital of Russia, and did everything to make the city look like the one. As he got the inspiration from his European trips, the architecture of the city, the historical centre of the current Petersburg, resembles the main tendencies of the time.
Lots of well-known architects, sculptors and artists worked hard to design, built and adorn various museums, palaces, churches and squares of the city.
You can start your trip in St Petersburg with moving along Nevsky prospekt. There you’ll Kazan cathedral, Singer house (known as the House of the Book). Turning on Bolshaya Morskaya Street you’ll appear on the famous Palace Square with its view on the gorgeous Winter Palace, as well as Hermitage and General Staff Building. Moving further, you’ll the Admiralty and St. Isaac’s Cathedral.
If you cross the Palace bridge, you’ll appear on the Spit of Vasilievsky island – the place that Peter the Great himself loved a lot.
